DUB WORLD • David Asher & The PROCESS Create a Parallel Musical Universe

New Music in REVIEW

Posted In:Arts & Entertainment, Local Music, National Music, Artist Feature | From Issue 851 | By:  Robert E Martin |  05th October, 2017

The new release by contemporary Reggae advocate, ambassador, songwriter, and innovative producer David Asher is titled Dub World -  an engaging remix of stellar tracks cultivated from his last groundbreaking 2016 outing Who Is That Mad Band? with The PROCESS.
Consisting of 11 tracks and produced by The Process and Chris Lewis, with additional production courtesy of On U Sound legends Adrian Sherwood, Skip McDonald and David Harrow, the remixes on Dub World unveil like a tapestry of hypnotic tonal, rhythmic, and electronic clarity that shimmers with strong melodic musical hooks and shines like freshly minted coins embedded with fresh musical re-invention.
With nine albums and CD’s under their belt and numerous remixes, as the CD has fallen by the wayside in recent years, Asher’s new approach to recording is to focus upon releasing fresh singles to keep the band constantly churning in the in the stream of commerce with fresh material; but given that Mad Band took seven years to record, mix and release – which was time well spent insofar as it is hands-down the group’s most accomplished and accessible work – the genesis for Dub World started right after the release of Mad Band two years ago.
“We didn’t want to take a break,” states Asher, “and saved all the balance and EQ settings from that album, so we could strip the mixes back and add effects and whatever else we chose to do to make the tracks unique.  That’s what Dub Mixing is all about.”
Consequently, the track titled Interstellar Medium, which features the late great Dick Wagner, is a radically remixed version of the track that appeared on Mad Band, as Asher was able to take the rhythm tracks and strip back effects in the original mix and add additional plug-ins and effects, as opposed to musical hardware on the project.  “Basically because everything was recorded digitial, we are able to move parts of the song around because we can,” Asher explains.
“The whole purpose for Dub Releases is to present an alternate version of the song that exists in a parallel universe,” he continues. “I’ve always admired Jamaican music and remixes are a big part of it. People like legendary Jamaican producer Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry are always screwing around with the sound, so what I wanted to do with Dub World is create more of a futuristic album with a futuristic sound.”
The initial reaction has been quite good and Asher says both the new Dub World and Who Is That Mad Band? Have both been selling well online and at live shows performed with his latest project. The DAB Band. “I did a limited run of Dub World to test the waters but sold so many the first day of its release both online, and later at shows, that I need to press a few more.”
It’s been a busy summer for Asher and his new more traditionally oriented reggae outfit, The DAB Band, but not one is rest upon his laurels, Asher is already busy at work writing new material for his latest project. “We played shows every weekend this summer and are playing Grand Rapids this weekend, but after that we’re going to take a little time off,” he explains. “I’m resurrecting The PROCESS for a Halloween show in Detroit, but the DAB Band has been going at it so hard that we need to slow down for a minute. Right now, I’m in the studio with Mikki Sound and she and I are working on a concept album that will feature some of my favorite Jamaican songs and sounds that have never hit the United States. But all these projects take time. Mad Band we started back in 2009 and it took 7 years go release, but I knew we could get Dub World done quickly if we applied ourselves, which is what we did.”
Consisting of David Asher on vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, drums & percussion; Garrick Owen on guitars; Bill Heffelfinger on guitars, bass, keyboards, drums & programming; Gabe Gonzalez on drums & backing vocals; and Seth Payton on bass, keyboards, guitars, percussion, backing vocals & horn arrangements, additional musicians on Dub World include backing vocalists Mikki Sound, Michelle Shaw, Faith Gateway, Maria Rose; percussionists Earl ‘the Squirrel’ and Derrick Davis; and horns courtesy of John Rickert, Matt Wickie & Dennis Lewandowski.  Additional guitarists include David Ivory, Pete Metropoulos; with additional programming provided by Skip McDonald.

Both Dub World and Who Is That Mad Band? can be purchased at Records & Tape Galore in Saginaw and online by visiting I-Tunes, CD Baby and Amazon.com.

Dub World, Review, Radio.

Dub World, the new album by THE PROCESS is getting great notices.

Check out this review on the Online Zine cultchaclash.com

The Process - Dub World (The Process / Temple Gong Recordings)

It's been a while since my last update, Cultcha Clash  has been out of sight but not out of mind. When David Asher (Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist of The Process) contacted me about the new CD, it seemed only appropriate that Cultcha Clash is set back off by it, as the last album by the group was the first review that I did for the site. This time around it's Dub World, which is, as the name implies, an excursion into version including  reworks of some of the previous, Who Is That Mad Band?

As I write this I am enjoying this set of tunes for the third time and each listen sounds better than the last. Strong rhythms and heavy bass through and through make this enjoyable to any dub-head.

Standouts include "Magnetosphere," which once again enlists Skip "Little Axe" McDonald. "Interstellar Medium," the dub of "Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde" (from Who Is That Mad Band?), is a spacey and ghostly groove with guitar from the late Dick Wagner. David Harrow remixes "Dear Mr. Fantasy" (Ochio Re-Mix), leaving only the vocals from the original interwoven into modular synths and electronic riddims. Finally, "Return The Treasures" (Adrian Sherwood Alternate Mix) featuring the great Lee "Scratch" Perry and Ghetto Priest wraps up the album in a superb fashion.

Check this out, it's available on CD or file formats. Would love to see some vinyl from this one, a 4 song EP or a 7" or 2, hopefully the future will bring Dub World wax. In the meantime, get it HERE.

THE PROCESS – Who Is That Mad Band? Review on DMME

Michigan warriors shake the spear of Rasta to make their stand and stay their ground in the face of fate.

You don’t have to descend from Jamaica to live by the principle of ital, and these Detroit folks have been proving the point for more than quarter of a century. “Who Is That Mad Band?” might be the group’s best offering to date, though, the fact stressed by presenting new versions of a couple older tracks here, so don’t be fooled by the album’s title and its cover: it’s the message that matters, not the form, and not for nothing references to herb were dropped now in favor of much holier smoke.

For all the collective’s merry stance, the laughter leading into of “Mystery Babylon” is a bitter one, and the pain is piled up high from the very beginning – thus that the band’s cosmic take on “Dear Mr. Fantasy” sounds like escapism into a dream – but they somehow eschew, even in the most roaring riddims and rhymes, the righteous rage the others would opt for. There is ire under “Fire Is Burning” and smouldering coals in its all-encompassing dub restyling at the end, yet the anger is shaped as a prayer: that’s why “The Lion Of Judah Hath Prevailed” trades it for acceptance of triumph.

The humor is here, too, what with an acoustic calypso of “It Is No Secret” which Garrick Owen adorns with exquisite six-string lace, or “Time Has Come” where David Asher’s silky voice shines in lyrical rays. Still, the update of classic story in “Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde” that is spiked with Dick Wagner’s solo, one of the late guitarist’s last cuts, turns into a slice of social satire, with skank and a smile, to alleviate its moral angle, while the riff and infectious chant of “Gypsy Wind” up the rock game immensely. And though the toasting of individual Wailers and other proponents of Jah music in “Tribute (To The Heroes)” is saved only by its sincere seriousness, “Return The Treasures” – one of a few Adrian Sherwood’s mixes on display – is a festive, if culturally sharp, gathering of various generations, as Lee Perry, Ghetto Priest and Little Axe all cut into the drift.

So yes, the band may be mad, but it’s often the madmen who tell you the truth.

Ras Seymour McClean
The show starts with an interview. Simon Wade calls in from London. David Asher and Skip McDonald answer the call in Detroit. Chicago? What is the reason that such a long-distance connection should be established?
One clue to the answer is Ras Seymour Mclean. He is also the gentleman in the picture above.
And the following is part of his story, word to Simon:
#Return The Treasures”  featured in the Wirebender’s show the album by THE PROCESS, “Who Is That Mad Band?”, was inspired by the tireless work of Ras Seymour Mclean, in his efforts to return the treasures of the fortress of Magdala in Ethiopia, which was looted by the British in 1868, back to the land where they belong. The holy relics and crown jewels are held to this day, in the British National museum.”

Album Review of The Process Who Is That Mad Band? at CultchaClash.com

Album Review of The Process Who Is That Mad Band? At CultchaClash.com
By Jon J Cut Soldanels
I wasn't familiar with Detroit's The Process before their current album Who Is That Mad Band? was sent to me via file transfer by their vocalist and co-founder (alongside Garrick Owen), David Asher. It immediately got my attention due to contributions from some of my musical heroes from the On-U Sound & Tackhead camp - namely Adrian Sherwood and Skip "Little Axe" McDonald as well as Ghetto Priest, David Harrow and the Mighty Upsetter, Lee "Scratch" Perry.
Upon further research I found that the band has been fusing Rock & Reggae since 1989, ("On a mission to fight ignorance, apathy and social retardation," says their website), they have produced 8 albums and several singles (available Here). Besides the On-U Sound collaborators, there is a Mothership connection in the band as well, with drummer Gabe Gonzalez who played with the P-Funk All-Stars. The album also features one of the last recordings from Dick Wagner, a name previously unfamiliar to me but after some research it became apparent that I'm well aware of his work with Lou Reed, Alice Cooper and Kiss to name but a few.

The 13 song album is strong all the way through, starting with the rocking "Mystery Babylon" that would appeal to a fan of Bad Brains heavy Reggae sound. Next comes "Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde" on which genetic modification becomes the topic. "Tribute (To the Heroes)" is one of my favorites on the album, as the title implies an homage to the legends, with a hype steppers riddim and an ill clavichord track, it's definitely a powerful tune. More Roots, Rock, Reggae on "Fire Is Burning," the dub of this one is also included and is well wicked! "Dear Mr. Fantasy" has a driving electronic rhythm with a ballad-like feel. There's more Rasta-Inspired consciousness and progressive Reggae on "The Lion Of Judah Hath Prevailed" and "Psalms Of David." On "It's No Secret" there is a strong world-roots vibe. "Gypsy Wind" is another Reggae rocker and "Time Has Come," with it's unique structure and sparseness, has an On-U Sound feel without a doubt.
"Return The Treasures" brings more reality lyrics from Ghetto Priest and Lee "Scratch" Perry and brings it once more with a super-tough dub.
The only complaint I have about this album, being the vinyl fiend that I am, is that it is not (yet) available on wax. If it were within my powers to press it myself, I would but I understand that that isn't a cheap...shall i say, Process. Big Up The Process, keep doing what you do! :) selecta j-cut

THE PROCESS Release a ‘Must-Have’ Modern Masterpiece

By Robert Martin, REVIEW MAGAZINE

It is a remarkable feat in itself that the visionary regional band known as The Process has lasted for 25-years with its essential line-up intact; but with their newest release that is now available on both CD and download, the group has achieved a miraculous career pinnacle and managed to create a musical masterpiece that if there is any justice in this world, should easily catapult them into the Major League.

Entitled Who Is That Mad Band?  this amazing tapestry of 13-tracks should be a MUST HAVE for anybody serious about modern music and is easily one of the most innovative and accessible recordings I have heard released all year. Seven years in the making and spanning six studios worldwide, each of the tracks shimmers with strong melodic musical hooks and shines with impeccable production values that propel the tightly constructed musical performances into stellar levels of perfection.

With all songs written by David Asher & Garrick Owen, the various tracks were recorded in Saginaw at Fire Hyena Studios and engineered by Chris Lewis, as well as U Be U Studios with Gee Pierce, Area 51 Studios in Flint with engineer Bernard Terry, and On U Sound Studios in London with engineer Matt Smyth and Brandon Harding, along with Soundhouse Studios in Ramsgate, UK with legendary engineer Skip McDonald, in addition to Workhouse Studios in Los Angeles with engineer David Harrow.

Consisting of David Asher on vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, drums & percussion; Garrick Owen on guitars; Bill Heffelfinger on guitars, bass, keyboards, drums & programming; Gabe Gonzalez on drums & backing vocals; and Seth Payton on bass, keyboards, guitars, percussion, backing vocals & horn arrangements, additional musicians include backing vocalists Mikki Sound, Michelle Shaw, Faith Gateway, Maria Rose; percussionists Earl ‘the Squirrel’ and Derrick Davis; and horns courtesy of John Rickert, Matt Wickie & Dennis Lewandowski.  Additional guitarists include David Ivory, Pete Metropoulos; with additional production provided by Skip McDonald, Adrian Sherwood and David Harrow.

But the exceptionally gratifying surprise on this release is with the guest appearance of legendary guitarist Dick Wagner, who turns in one of his final performances before his untimely passing on the remarkable track, Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.  To hear Wagner’s guitar soar above the hypnotically entrancing hook-lines into the stratosphere with his signature inventiveness is worth the price of admission alone.

Further currency is added by the appearance of Ghetto Priest on the track The Lion of Judah Hath Prevailed and also with the help of legendary reggae icon Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’ on the haunting track, Return the Treasures.

With some of the strongest melodic lines they have created to date, bathed and propelled by intricately constructed rhythms, each track builds upon the next into a breathtaking crescendo that is – hands down – some of the best new work you are likely to experience.

Another particular stand-out is The Process reading of the classic Traffic number, Dear Mr. Fantasy, with an arrangement by Heffelfinger and vocals by Asher that are precise, carefully enunciated, and completely compelling – easily one of the best versions of the song that I’ve ever heard.

Equally compelling is the mesmerizing cadence of Return the Treasures, which is infused with Perry’s mystical aura and is based upon the true story of Seymour McClain, who had a mission to repatriate the crown jewels sitting in the British Museum that the British stole from Ethiopia after their invasion in the 1880s.

According to Asher, “The Emperor of Ethiopia kidnapped some envoys of Queen Victoria, so the British sent an envoy into Ethiopia and killed the Emperor and stole the jewels. The British even nailed his scalp to the doorway, so it was pretty barbarous. Seymour asked me to write a song about it, but he passed away, so I decided to write Return the Treasures as a tribute to Seymour. We finished it in one day and then Skip started adding midi stuff and guitar parts, the second day we slogged through more keyboards and midi in a 12-hour day, which again was very taxing. I’m used to spending five hours in a studio and even then I can get a bit fried. But during the mixing, we were able to get Lee Perry onto the track, so it was all an incredibly worthwhile experience.”

Saginaw News Article on THE PROCESS 25th Anniversary Show

Vassar's The Process band celebrates 25 years with 'a class reunion of sorts'.

Members of the band The Process, from left, Bill Heffelfinger, David Asher, Garrick Owen and Gabe Gonzalez. (Sue White | MLive File Photo)
For MLive.com By Sue White

BAY CITY, MI – David Asher is feeling very blessed and that translates into a real holiday blessing for fans of The Process, the reggae/punk/funk/rock band he and a group of friends brought out of Vassar 25 years ago.
"David's parents would go to Florida every winter and we'd rehearse in their family room," remembered Arek Aneszko, the former drummer returning from Chicago to perform with his former bandmates at what he calls "a class reunion of sorts" Saturday, Dec. 26, at Bemo's Bar, 701 Madison, in Bay City.
"It was a style unknown and unpredictable at the time. We'd play in a place and people would ask, 'Who are these guys?' We weren't grunge, we weren't hard rock but we didn't just play Bob Marley, either. It would always leave someone in the audience intrigued and that was the fun part for me. Who would have expected it?"
For Seth Payton, among the latest round of musicians to join the group, in the studio recording a new album due for a spring release and onstage, "it's always been about the infectious groove. My band Stamp'd played with them at the old Captain's Cove in Saginaw once and David and it kicked off a great friendship with David.
"I was still doing my own thing but I'd jam with them sometimes, doing what I love. As I started playing with them more, I just brought a little of my own influence into it, a different outlook, sort of like when the new intern shakes up the office. It's really exciting; it's fun to be involved."
Asher promises to bring it all together Saturday, calling on all past and present members to step back in the groove. The night begins at 9 p.m. with Operation 13, with The Process taking the stage at 10:30 p.m. Closing the night are Ben McArthur and E.V. Duhzit and the Soul Jar.
"We're a changing group, working in all the members and maybe a few others who want to sit in," Asher said. In addition to the current line-up, which also features founding guitarist Garrick Owen and percussionist Gabe Gonzalez, who also performs with George Clinton's P-Funk Allstars, watch for the return of former bassist Bill Heffelfinger, who now teaches at a charter grade school in Las Vegas, and Sam Metropoulos.
"The funny thing, in the beginning, I listened to a lot of records from the British label that I've now recorded with in London, with Adrian Sherwood, Skip McDonald and Ghetto Priest. I'd listen to the music and I had this very naĆÆve thought, 'This is something I could do.'"
While Asher admits he probably should have been too scared to try it, the final result was the release of "Mystery Babylon" in 1991, soon to come out again with other early albums on remastered CDs, and the start of a stage show that included a giant pig's head.
"They're still my inspiration," he said of Sherwood's stable, and it wasn't long before the eclectic cover band moved into writing original music.
"We've been working on this new album for four and a half years and it's really been exciting to watch it develop. Dick Wagner is on there; we recorded with him two weeks before he passed away. There's a real collaborative nature to the whole project. I'm really, really happy with the songwriting effort."
Aneszko is really excited.
"David sent me some music to refresh my memory and I still play enough here in Chicago to be tight," he said, remembering the benefit he did for the late journalist James Foley, who was executed by terrorist forces in 2014.
"But I haven't really played with the band much since the late 1990s. It's funny where life takes you; now my son is getting into music, studying piano and getting his first drum set. The thing about music is that it's in my roots; it's in my genes. I can slip right in."
Payton, who is back onstage after battling brain cancer, sees the show and coming album as "a good catapult into new life," he said. "It's all new material and it's very exciting. For me, it's about what I'm going to leave my daughter and future generations as my legacy. This music will live long beyond me and I want to make sure it's timeless. We've got the talent; we need to move forward."
One thing that hasn't changed through the years, Asher said, is that most of the songs still have a moral compass, embracing the visceral fight between right and wrong.
"It's our strength and inspiration," he said. "It's been a real journey and here's the next 25 years. We're doing our best right now."

BAY CITY, MI — It's been 25 years since Detroit's seminal rock-reggae fusion band the Process formed, and to celebrate, they're playing a free show in Bay City.
The gig is happening Saturday, Dec. 26, at BeMo's Bar, 701 S. Madison Ave. The show starts at 9 p.m.
"We've always had a nice time at BeMo's," said David Asher, vocalist for the Process. "They support original music seven days a week and we've had several shows over there that have been successful. It seemed like the obvious choice."
Asher formed the group with guitarist Garrick Owen. Since 1991, they've released six studio albums, a compilation, one live album, and a couple of live DVDs.
"We used to be fanatic, practicing four or five days a week," Asher said. "Over time, we built it up. We're working on our seven full-length album now. It's going to be interesting, as we did some of it over in England."
Producing the forthcoming record is Adrian Sherwood, who has worked with such artists as Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, Ministry and KMFDM, and Skip McDonald of hip-hop progenitors the Sugarhill Gang.
In 2007, Detroit Music Awards named the band Outstanding World Music/Reggae/Ska Artist. Two years prior, the organization named Asher and Owen Outstanding World Songwriters.
The Process is currently composed of Asher, Owen, Bill Heffelfinger, Seth Payton, and Gabe Gonzalez, the latter a drummer known for working with George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic. Due to the show marking the band's 25th anniversary, a few previous members of the group are to perform with them as well, Asher said.
"For this show, we're bringing in all of our members," he said, though he added they haven't had that many personnel changes over the years.
In his time with the band, Asher said he's seen the Michigan music scene change quite a bit, with original music being far more prevalent now than it was during the Process' inception.
"It was kind of insulary," Asher said. "When we first started, there were no original bands playing in bars. It was kind of unheard of, really. Now, it's pretty common place."
The Process is to perform an extended set starting about 10:30 p.m. Also on the bill are Ben McArthur, Operation 13, and E.Z. Duzhit and the Soul Jar. There is no cover charge.

When considering the impact of legendary bands that have cut a definitive creative mark upon the Mid-Michigan region, it is impossible not to include the legacy of The Process – a Vassar-based group of innovative creative forces who pioneered a unique fusion between reggae & punk rock that continues to remain true to their musical vision.
Consisting of core members David Asher, Garrick Owen, Bill Heffelfinger, Gabe Gonzales, and Seth Payton, the group first exploded on the scene back in 1990 with the release of Mystery Babylon that hit audiences with a full body blast of sound and theatrical live shows that never strayed from their unique vision of reggae music melded with a molten embrace of social consciousness and spirituality; and it is through this deep connection to the legacy left by Jamaican Emperor Haile Selassie and the principles of Rastafarian religion that their music has always stood as more than just another silly diversion.
The Process have always created astonishingly intricate and beautiful music in meticulously crafted layers of sound and rhythm with a voice that speaks an uncompromising truth; and on Saturday, December 26th, they will be staging a special 25th Anniversary Show at Bemo’s in Bay City that will include a reunion of all present & past members of the group that is free to the public.
Few bands in the region have remained intact for 25-years with as many core members. And being essentially an all-original group pursuing their own musical vision from a very defined spiritual & political perspective, The Process is truly a band of brothers in a league of their own.
Asher says he attributes the group’s longevity to the fact he’s been too stubborn to give up on his dream. “Garrick and Bill have always contributed, but I’m the one that’s really hung on; and in the process (no pun intended) have sacrificed a lot of relationships, mostly with women. Music is my Mistress and women come second, which is kind of sad, but I have no regrets. I love what I do and am fortunate to still be creating.”
Indeed, that focus upon musical creation has now led the group to a career pinnacle, with the sessions now completed on their latest recordings, which are in the stages of final mixing for an anticipated Spring release.  Consisting of 13-tracks and produced by The Process and Chris Lewis, when listening to the rough mixes alone it is safe to say that this next project could well be the one to catapult the group into the Major League.  With some of the strongest melodic lines they have created to date, bathed and propelled by intricately constructed rhythms, each track builds upon the next into a breathtaking crescendo that is – hands down – some of the best new work I’ve heard all year.
When looking back at the arc of trials, tribulations, and creative accomplishments of The Process, has Asher’s musical vision for the band evolved or strayed much since their inception?   “I would say its become more refined as the technology and musicianship of the group has improved over the years. We’re much better at what we do and our new recordings have really given me a chance to showcase my own abilities more than anything we’ve done in the past.”
“I don’t really about the length of time we’ve been working together, but I always figured one day we would work with bothAdrian Sherwood and maybe Lee Perry someday,” continues Dave. “And now with this latest project, we finally have achieved that goal.”
“I’ve been working on this new album for 5 years now, so the band has been relatively low-key. Bill recently moved out to Las Vegas, and I’m not rushing anything about it,” he continues. “We’ve been working with Chris Lewis – a young producer from Saginaw – who gave us affordable recording rates and over the last several years has become as good asGee Pierce and Bernard Terry or any producer we’ve ever worked with. Chris has an incredible set-up and an ear for the right things to do and its been exciting watching him grow. We developed together on this new album and helped keep the dream alive during some right stretches.”
Slated for a tentative Spring release, the new recordings also include one of the last performances by Saginaw’s own musical rock legend Dick Wagner, recorded shortly before his passing last year. Additional contributions are also made by the aforementioned legendary producer Adrian Sherwood, who produced the last Nine Inch Nails album, and is best known for his Industrial, Reggae & Dub mixes, along with appearances by Skip MacDonald, one of the original Sugar Hill Gang hip-hop pioneers.
While working with Wagner, Asher recalls the emotional drain and artistic power of those final sessions. “Dick and I became friends in the 1990s and he sent me a message saying how much he admired what we were doing and how he wanted to get us into the studio. That never happened and then he moved away to Phoenix and got sick, and then got better, and during this whole time I would get emails from him that were always encouraging.”
“Along the way I wrote this song Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde that I felt was made for Dick,” continues Asher, “so phoned and asked if he would contribute to the song. He said that he would be in Michigan to do some gigs in June and we worked out a reasonable rate for his services and then the day we were set to record he phoned to tell me that he wasn’t feeling very good, so wondered if he could just record his part in his own studio.”
“I simply told him, ‘Dick, we should record it now. We’re here, I have cash in hand, and I don’t want to put this off because I want the experience of working together with you.’  So he agreed and came up with his manager and looked a little tired at the session, but Dick was a strapping & strong guy. For about 3 hours we tried a bunch of ideas and he played his ass off on that track. Dick had a rock ‘n roll heart and his guitar playing was exquisitely beautiful. At the end of the session, he was drained, because he’d just finished two shows at Callahan Music hall. We embraced and and he said ‘Things are different, David, because this time I’m feeling really tired.’    Then he went and had his heart surgery and died. When I found out about his passing, it felt like I’d been punched in the heart.”
Equally distinct are the recollections Asher carries working with producer Adrian Sherwood – a longtime iconic hero of the group.   “Back in 1991 he was a big inspiration for me,” recalls Asher, “because I saw how he was working with punk musicians and creating early mash collaborations between reggae & punk artists.  Between the stuff Adrian was creating and Lee Perry’s work, I thought to myself, ‘I can do this’, so Adrian provided the raw inspiration for a lot of the Process’ early work.”
“When we finished our last album, I mailed it to him, but it got send back to me with a note that it had not bee requested. However, sometime later I got a message from Ghetto Priest, who we worked with on the Lion of Judah Hath Prevaileda couple years ago, who brought in David Harrow – this great electronic music producer, along with Skip MacDonald,co-founder of the legendary Sugarhill Gang.  So I met all these like-minded people from different directions, and before I knew it, I was flying to London to record with Adrian and Skip at On U Sound Studios.”
“The first day I recorded with Adrian in London we did a 17-hour session and spent two days recording and one day of mixing,” continues Asher. “I wrote this song called Return the Treasures that is based upon Seymour McClain, this old Dread who had a mission to repatriate the crown jewels sitting in the British Museum that the British stole from Ethiopia after their invasion in the 1880s”
“The Emperor of Ethiopia kidnapped some envoys of Queen Victoria, so the British sent an envoy into Ethiopia and killed the Emperor and stole the jewels. The British even nailed his scalp to the doorway, so it was pretty barbarous. Seymour asked me to write a song about it, but he passed away, so I decided to write Return the Treasures as a tribute to Seymour. I finished it in one day and then Skip started adding midi stuff and guitar parts, the second day we slogged through more keyboards and midi in a 12-hour day, which again was very taxing. I’m used to spending five hours in a studio and even then I can get a bit fried. But during the mixing, we were able to get Lee Perry onto the track, so it was all an incredibly worthwhile experience.”
Insofar as the onus of the Rastafarian religion has remained at the spiritual core of The Process as an ever-present constant, as a result the entire litany of their catalog has retained its integrity, largely because it casts much of the band’s topical material as a battle between good and evil, and right versus wrong.  When Asher looks at the social landscape over the past 25 years, does he view the group and their commitment to the political ethos of Rastafarianism as having made an impact on peoples’ lives?
“I think we have,” he reflects. “When we pushed hard for legalization of medical marijuana back in the 1990s, we were viewed as pariahs and became a lightning rod, especially after the prosecution by the Saginaw County Prosecutor’s office under then prosecutor Mike Thomas of Rock-a-Rolla Records entrepreneur Ed Dews, who’s stores were closed and assets seized under our Draconian Civil Forfeiture laws. But now we see the tide turning on that, and I think we helped lay a lot of the groundwork and raise consciousness about it.  We have made a difference, but have a long way to go. When it comes to progress there is something wrong with human nature – its’ like we take one step forward and two back.”
How about high points in terms of live shows over the past 25 years? Are there any that stand out in Asher’s minds as career highpoints?   “I love the shows we’ve done at The Machine Shop over the last four years, and will always remember the Rock-a-Rolla Rally down in Flint.  We also did several memorable shows at the Vassar Theatre and I loved the live radio shows we did out in Los Angeles on air in the studio at WFBE.”
For their 25th Anniversary Show at Bemo’s all original members of The Process will be performing, along with anybody that’s ever played in the band.
“Just the fact we’re still together with our core members intact is amazing to me,” concludes Asher. “But I think the reason we are still around is that we aren’t out there revisiting the past or parading our oldies. We’re pushing new material and keeping things fresh, both for us and our audiences.”
“That fact alone makes a huge difference in the large scope of things.”
The Process 25th Anniversary Show will take place Saturday, December 26th at Bemo’s Bar, 701 S. Madison Ave., in Bay City. All past & current members of the band will be present, along with special guests The Mongrels, E.Z. Duzhit and The Soul Jar.  The Process will perform at 10:30 PM and there is no cover for this special evening of entertainment.
